TAAF

The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) comprise five districts: the Crozet archipelago, the Kerguelen archipelago, Saint-Paul and Amsterdam islands (forming the Southern Lands), Adélie Land in Antarctica, and the Scattered Islands. The Scattered Islands, attached since 2007, include tropical islands in the Mozambique Channel and Tromelin. This vast associated Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.3 million km² positions France as the world's second-largest maritime power.

As a territory without a permanent population or elected officials, the TAAF are governed by a Prefect, who acts as the senior administrator overseeing all public action. The superior administration is responsible for missions of sovereignty, support for scientific research, biodiversity preservation, and logistics. The complexity of these missions, the isolation of the territories, and the need to maintain scientific activities in extreme environments necessitate a sophisticated logistical chain, primarily supported by their supply vessel, Le Marion Dufresne, and their polar icebreaker patrol vessel, L’Astrolabe.
