About
About Star Ferry
Star Ferry (天星小輪) runs the most famous crossing in Hong Kong — the short hop across Victoria Harbour aboard its green-and-white double-decker ferries. Founded in 1888 as the Kowloon Ferry Company and renamed in 1898, it has become one of the most celebrated ferry rides in the world.
Across Victoria Harbour
Its boats shuttle between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central, and between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai, with a circular Harbour Tour for sightseers. The eight-minute journey, framed by one of the great city skylines, carries tens of thousands of passengers a day.
An icon, and famously cheap
The historic diesel-electric ferries carry "Star" names — Morning Star, Meridian Star, Celestial Star and others, inspired by Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar." Fares remain among the best value in the city, a few Hong Kong dollars paid by Octopus, cash or card. A proposed fare rise in 1966 famously triggered days of protest; today the ride is a cherished symbol of Hong Kong.
