About

About Siremar

Siremar is a brand that outlived the company behind it. Since spring 2016 the services sold under the Siremar name have been delivered by two other operators — Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori for the ferries and Liberty Lines for the hydrofoils — with the Siremar entity itself now under the direction of Caronte & Tourist.

Which matters when something goes wrong

If you book a Siremar crossing, the ship, the crew and the customer service belong to whichever of those two companies operates that particular sailing. It is a normal arrangement in Italian island shipping, but it is worth knowing before you try to change a ticket — the name on the booking and the name on the hull are not necessarily the same.

Milazzo is the gate to the Aeolians

All the mainland departures we hold leave from Milazzo, on Sicily’s northern coast. Milazzo to Lipari takes 90 minutes at 14:00, and Milazzo to Salina takes 200 at 16:00 — more than three hours, because that sailing works its way round the islands rather than running direct.

The difference between 200 minutes and 60

Compare the two ways to reach Salina. Direct from Milazzo it is 200 minutes. But Lipari to Salina is only 60, leaving at 15:30 — ninety minutes after the Lipari boat arrives. Taking the 14:00 to Lipari and connecting is faster than the through sailing, and this is exactly the kind of thing a route-by-route timetable hides.

Ferries and hydrofoils are separate products here

The Siremar site splits its offering into traghetti and aliscafi and the two run to different timetables, different piers in places, and different weather thresholds. Our data does not distinguish them, so a crossing time on this page may belong to either. On the Aeolian routes that difference can be more than an hour.

Three sailings, one archipelago

What we hold is a thin slice of an extensive Aeolian network reaching Vulcano, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi as well as Lipari and Salina. If the island you want is not listed here, that is our gap.
