About
About Penn-ar-Bed
Penn-ar-Bed works the island crossings of western Finistère with four ships, fanning out from three harbours on the north coast — Brest, Le Conquet and Camaret — and from Audierne to the south, towards Ouessant, Molène and Sein. The current timetable holds 102 scheduled departures across 24 port pairs.
One ship, one job
The fleet is not interchangeable. Enez Sun 3 does nothing but Audierne–Sein: thirteen crossings, every one of them timed at exactly sixty minutes. Fromveur 2 carries the northern network almost single-handed with 48 departures, Brest and Le Conquet out to Molène and Ouessant. Enez Eussa 3 adds 16 more on the same waters from Le Conquet. Petrel is the outlier: 25 departures, based on Camaret through the summer but picking up one-off sailings almost everywhere else on the network.
Leave from Le Conquet, not Brest
Same island, very different crossing. Ouessant is 60 to 85 minutes from Le Conquet and 170 minutes from Brest — the Brest departures at 08.10 and 08.20 call at Molène on the way, which is where the extra hour and a half goes. If the island is the point of the trip rather than the passage, the drive west to Le Conquet buys most of a morning back.
The route that runs five Sundays a year
Sein's link to the north coast barely exists. Brest–Sein and Camaret–Sein sail on Sundays only, between 9 August and 6 September — five dates in the whole year, one boat each way. Camaret–Molène is narrower still: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 to 20 August. Sein's real lifeline is Audierne, daily and year-round.
What disappears in September
Sixty-nine departures hold to 31 December, with the Brest connections running to the 27th and 30th. Everything Petrel works out of Camaret stops in the first ten days of September — Camaret–Brest on the 6th, Camaret–Ouessant on the 10th. After that Camaret has no scheduled sailing at all and the network contracts to its winter shape: Le Conquet and Brest for the northern islands, Audierne for Sein.
Crossing times are not symmetric
Ouessant to Molène is booked at 15 minutes at its quickest; the return leg is 30 to 35. Molène to Brest runs 115–120 minutes against 120–130 outbound. The differences come from the order of calls rather than the distance, so a return trip is worth reading in both directions before assuming the times mirror.
