About the Zadar crossing

The Zadar to Iž crossing is the everyday lifeline for one of the quietest inhabited islands in the Zadar archipelago. Iž lies tucked between Ugljan and Dugi otok, and Jadrolinija connects it to the mainland daily by both fast catamaran and car ferry.

Two ways to sail

The quickest option is the Jadrolinija catamaran line 9405, running Zadar – Mali Iž – Veli Iž and on to Rava; it is a foot-passenger service only, with the full line to Rava taking about 1 hour 5 minutes, so Iž is reached well before that. For vehicles, the car ferry line 435 (aboard the small M/B Sis) sails Zadar – Bršanj (Iž) – Rava – Mala Rava, with the Zadar–Bršanj leg taking roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 20 minutes. A second operator, G&V Iadera, also runs a foot-passenger service (line 9406) on the route.

Where you land

  • Veli Iž, on the west of the island, is the main village: a working fishing port with a small marina, a couple of shops and a few taverns where nets are still mended by the harbour.
  • Mali Iž, in the south, is a scatter of small hamlets and is the more secluded corner of the island.
  • The car ferry uses the separate Bršanj ramp rather than the village pier.

About the island

Iž has only around 500 inhabitants across its two villages and is known for an old pottery tradition, once producing clay cooking pots that supplied much of the Adriatic coast. It is unspoiled and crowd-free, a genuine escape rather than a resort. Choose the catamaran if you are on foot and want speed, or the car ferry if you are bringing a vehicle, and check the current timetable, as departures thin out in the low season.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the ferry from Zadar to Iž take?

It depends on the service. The fast catamaran reaches Iž in well under an hour, since the full run all the way to Rava is about 1 hour 5 minutes. The car ferry to the Bršanj ramp on Iž takes roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 20 minutes.

Can I take a car from Zadar to Iž?

Yes, on the Jadrolinija car ferry line 435, which sails Zadar – Bršanj (Iž) – Rava – Mala Rava aboard the M/B Sis. The fast catamaran line 9405 does not carry cars; it is foot-passenger only.

Which company operates the Zadar to Iž route?

Jadrolinija runs both the catamaran (line 9405) and the car ferry (line 435). A second operator, G&V Iadera, also runs a foot-passenger service (line 9406) on the same crossing.

Which village does the ferry arrive at on Iž?

The catamaran calls at Mali Iž and Veli Iž, with Veli Iž being the main village and fishing port on the west of the island. The car ferry lands separately at the Bršanj ramp rather than at the village pier.

Do boats to Iž run all year round?

Yes, Iž is served daily throughout the year because it is an inhabited island, but there are more departures in the summer high season than in the low season. Always check the current Jadrolinija timetable before travelling.

How much does a ticket cost?

Ticket prices vary by operator, season and whether you bring a vehicle. Check the operator (G&V Line Iadera) for current fares.

Can I take a pet on this ferry?

Most ferry operators allow pets on this route, usually in a carrier, on deck or in designated pet areas or cabins, and registered assistance dogs travel free. Rules and any fees vary by operator and vessel — check with G&V Line Iadera, so declare your pet when booking.

What's the luggage allowance?

Foot passengers can normally bring their own luggage aboard at no extra charge, with racks or a luggage area near the entrance, and there is usually no airline-style weight limit. Oversized or excess items may carry a fee, so check with the operator if you are travelling with bulky baggage.

Where can I check live sailing times?
