About the Stokkvågen ferjekai – Træna ferjekai crossing
People have lived on Træna for around nine thousand years, which makes it the oldest fishing community in Norway and something more than a remote island stop. The archipelago counts 477 islands, skerries and rocks; only two of them exceed a square kilometre. The ferry from Stokkvågen takes two hours to cover nearly 24 nautical miles of open Norwegian Sea.
Two sailings, and they do not share a day
One departure leaves at 09:05 on Thursdays. The other leaves at 17:45 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Between them they cover four days of the week, and on the other three there is no car ferry from this quay at all.
Open water, not a fjord
This crossing is not sheltered. Træna lies out beyond the skerry belt with sea on every side, which is why a 24-nautical-mile run is timetabled at a full two hours rather than the ninety minutes the distance alone would suggest. Weather cancels sailings here more often than it does inside the fjords.
The island has other links
Træna took Nordland’s first express boat route in 1976, and passenger craft still connect it to Nesna, Stokkvågen and Sandnessjøen. If the car ferry does not run on the day you need, the fast boat may — but it will not take a vehicle.
