About the Newcastle – Amsterdam crossing
Every night at 17:00, all year, across 310 nautical miles of North Sea. DFDS works the route with two ships, King Seaways and Princess Seaways, sailing from North Shields on the Tyne to IJmuiden, the port for Amsterdam. It is the only scheduled passenger link between north-east England and the Netherlands.
The listed duration is longer than the voyage
The timetable shows 1,005 minutes — sixteen and three-quarter hours — because it measures clock to clock, and the Netherlands is an hour ahead. A 17:00 departure arriving at 09:45 local time is about 15 hours 45 minutes actually at sea. On any crossing between time zones, the published figure and the time aboard are different numbers.
Overnight by design, not by accident
An evening departure and a mid-morning arrival turn a long passage into a night’s sleep. Both ships carry cabins accordingly, along with restaurants, bars, a cinema and children’s areas; both were refitted in a €10 million programme during the first months of 2024.
Vehicles cross too
This is a full car ferry, not a passenger service, and for a driver heading from northern England into continental Europe it removes the entire journey south to Dover. The return leaves the Netherlands at 17:30 and reaches the Tyne mid-morning, so the pattern works in both directions.
