About the Gooseberry Point TerminalLummi Island Terminal crossing

Five minutes across Hale Passage from the mainland at Gooseberry Point to Lummi Island, 37 sailings a day on the M/V Whatcom Chief. The island has no bridge; this is the only public way on.

No reservations, no cash

Whatcom County takes no bookings for this crossing — you queue and you board. It also takes no cash: fares are paid with multi-ride punch cards bought online or by mail, and not sold in person at the dock. Needs-based punch cards are available for islanders.

Some sailings will not take your car

Two rules catch drivers out. Vehicles over 40,000 GVW are barred on any tide below zero, and certain weekday runs carry fuel trucks only — no other vehicles until the next departure. If the dock does not clear, the county adds unscheduled extra runs rather than leaving traffic waiting.

Hours and the annual dry dock

Monday to Friday 05.40–00.10, Saturday 07.00–00.30, Sunday and holidays 07.00–00.10. The vessel goes to dry dock from 12 September to 4 October 2026, when service arrangements change. Run by Whatcom County Public Works.
