Ten minutes behind the other bank

The boat leaving Spaarndam goes at :10, :30 and :50. Put the two together and the crossing has a departure every ten minutes, alternating sides — one vessel, never idle.

Four hundred metres of a working canal

0.2 nautical miles, timed at 6 minutes. Most of that is the ramps and the queue; the canal itself takes about two. Seagoing ships pass through here, which is why the crossing is not a bridge.
