About Tung Ping Chau
You cannot reach this island on a weekday. Tsui Wah Ferry runs from Ma Liu Shui at 09:00 on Saturdays and Sundays and again at 15:30 on Saturdays only; the single return leaves the island at 17:15 at weekends. Three sailings out, two back, and nothing at all from Monday to Friday.
The crossing takes 67 minutes — a long way by Hong Kong standards, and the reason for the restriction. Tung Ping Chau lies in Mirs Bay in the far north-east, closer to the mainland Chinese coast than to Kowloon.
The island is made of shale laid down in layers a few centimetres thick, which erodes into the flat terraces and stacks that got it UNESCO Global Geopark status; its villages were abandoned as their people left for the city and Britain in the mid-twentieth century. A 09:00 out and 17:15 back is not a limitation on the schedule so much as the schedule itself: the day trip is the service.
