Ferries from Træna hurtigbåtkai

People have gathered on these islands for 9,000 years. The Kirkhelleren cave on the island of Sanna holds the oldest settlement traces on this coast — a vast rock shelter that has been a meeting place since the Stone Age, and is still used for concerts.

⚠ This is genuinely far out to sea

Træna lies well offshore from the Helgeland coast, in open water. Crossings are cancelled in weather that would not affect a fjord, and the mainland connection is not something to leave to the day.

If you are coming out here, build in a spare day at each end. There is no road and no bridge and there never will be.

Kirkhelleren

The cave on Sanna is enormous and cathedral-shaped, with a floor that has been walked on for ninety centuries. Excavations found tools, bones and burials. It is not a managed monument — you walk in.

The Træna festival, held out here in summer, uses it as a venue, which is either a desecration or exactly the right continuation depending on who you ask locally.

The islands

A scatter of low skerries with one main settlement and a population in the hundreds. Sanna rises abruptly out of the sea in a set of sharp peaks visible from a long way off — the landmark that made this place findable in the first place.

Season

The boats run all year on a reduced winter pattern. The festival fills every bed on the islands for one weekend in July; the rest of the summer is quiet.
