About Steilene
Steilene sits at the centre of three crossings: Ommen at 0.8 nautical miles and three minutes, Fjellstrand at 1.4 miles and eight, Ildjernet at 1.8 miles and seven. Ten sailings a week on the first, nine on the others, between 10:16 and 19:23.
Being the hub of a small network means the boat calls here more often than at any of its neighbours, and in both directions — the pier sees traffic all afternoon rather than twice a day.
The Steilene group is four islets off Nesodden, one of them carrying a lighthouse that has marked the approach to Oslo since the nineteenth century. The name comes from the Norwegian for the wheel a body was broken on — this was a place of execution, and the islands were chosen so that the results were visible to ships coming up the fjord to the capital.
