Ferries from Soundview

Soundview is where NYC Ferry reaches the eastern Bronx — 132 active sailings from a landing on the Bronx River mouth, serving a neighbourhood the subway map treats as an afterthought. It is the northernmost stop in the system.

Why the route was built

Soundview and Clason Point are a long way from a fast subway, and the bus into Manhattan is slow. Nineteen minutes to the Upper East Side by water is a genuinely different proposition, and the route was created as an equity measure rather than a commercial one.

That is also why the ridership and the subsidy per passenger on this route are argued about in New York in a way the Brooklyn routes are not.

⚠ No free transfer

NYC Ferry fares are separate from the subway and bus, with no transfer. For a Bronx commuter reaching Manhattan that is a second fare on top of whatever gets them to the pier — the single most common objection to the route, and a fair one.

The three-minute crossing

Ferry Point Park is barely across the water and takes 32 of this landing's sailings. It is one of the shortest scheduled crossings in New York, and it exists because the Bronx River is wide enough to be a barrier and narrow enough to be worth bridging by boat.

Where the landing is

At Clason Point, on the Bronx side of the East River where the Bronx River comes in, beside Soundview Park. Local buses connect it to the 6 train.

Weekday-peak shaped with a thin midday service. Summer weekends bring park traffic the timetable does not always anticipate.
