Ferries from Son

Son has one route and it runs nine times a week: 3.6 nautical miles across to Filtvet in 15 minutes, departing at 12:10 and 17:40 under two day patterns, with the boats back at 11:53 and 17:23.

Midday and late afternoon, nothing else. The crossing serves an outing rather than a journey — over for lunch, back before evening.

Son is an old timber port on the eastern shore in Vestby, whose wooden houses and harbour drew painters and writers from the late nineteenth century onwards; the Dutch trade that built it left the name of the Son fjord and a street plan that predates the road. In summer the harbour fills with sailing boats, and the scheduled ferry to the far shore is one of the few ways of getting off this coast without one.
