Ferries from Somo

Somo sits across the bay from Santander, in the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar on the Cantabrian coast of northern Spain. It is about 22 km from the city by road, but only a short boat ride directly across the water — which is why the Los Reginas launch, rather than the bus, is how most visitors arrive.

Getting here by ferry

Los Reginas runs the passenger launch from central Santander, calling at Pedreña and Somo. The crossing takes around 30 minutes and costs €4.00 one way, €6.50 return. In August 2026 there are 32 weekday sailings and 31 at weekends, roughly every 20 to 30 minutes through the day, with the last boat back late in the evening.

These are small passenger boats: no cars are carried. Bicycles and leashed dogs are usually fine, which suits the way most people use the route — over for the beach in the morning, back in the evening. Drivers have to go the long way round the bay.

What Somo is known for

Surf, mainly. Somo faces the open Cantabrian Sea and its beach runs into those of Loredo and El Puntal to form nearly eight kilometres of fine golden sand — among the most extensive in Cantabria, and the stretch that shelters the Bay of Santander from Atlantic swell. It is the region's main surf centre, with schools, board hire and the Centro de Surf de Somo, plus kitesurfing, paddleboarding and a skatepark.

Beyond the beach there is kayaking on the Ría de Cubas, horse riding along the sand, cycling and the marked walking routes of Ribamontán al Mar. The village itself is small and seasonal — busy through July and August, much quieter outside them.
