The town end of the crossing sends its boats at 08:20 and 15:30 and receives them at 07:45 and 14:50 — 20 sailings a week over two nautical miles, 25 minutes each way, all year.

Half an hour of the sound for what would otherwise be a substantial drive round the head of the bay is the whole proposition, and it has not changed in a long time.

Risør is one of the best-preserved wooden towns on the Skagerrak coast, its white houses climbing the slope behind the inner harbour, built on timber exports to the Netherlands and Britain from the seventeenth century. Fire took the town in 1861 and it was rebuilt in the same style; the result is the hvite by, the white town, and a harbour front that still works as one.
