Ferries from Pula

Pula sits at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula, its harbour tucked beneath the town's famous 1st-century Roman amphitheatre — one of the six largest surviving arenas in the world, and impossible to miss as your catamaran swings into port. The main passenger berth is on the town waterfront (Riva), a short walk from the Arena, the forum and the bus station, which makes Pula an unusually walkable ferry town by Adriatic standards.

The headline connection is the seasonal fast catamaran to Venice, a roughly 3-hour 30-minute open-water crossing of the northern Adriatic. It is run by Venezia Lines and by Kompas / Adriatic Lines (using vessels such as the Prince of Venice and San Frangisk), and it is strictly a summer service: sailings typically run from early June to around 20 September, several times a week in peak July–August, with extra Saturday departures mid-June to mid-September. These are foot-passenger-only high-speed craft — no cars — and because seats sell out around Italian and Croatian holidays, booking ahead is strongly advised. Some rotations call at Rovinj or Poreč en route, so check whether your ticket is a direct Pula–Venice run.

Pula is also a springboard for the Kvarner islands. Kapetan Luka (Krilo) operates a foot-passenger catamaran on the Pula – Unije – Susak – Mali Lošinj – Ilovik – Silba – Zadar line, giving day-trippers and island-hoppers a direct link to the little-visited western Kvarner isles. Unije is roughly two hours out; Susak, with its sandy paths and no cars, is about three hours. In high season the catamaran runs twice daily, heading down the coast toward Zadar in the morning and returning in the afternoon. Local operator Miatours has historically served Unije and neighbouring islands as well.

Reaching the port is straightforward: Pula has its own airport (seasonal flights), a bus station five minutes' walk uphill, and good coach links to Rijeka, Zagreb and along the Istrian coast. A practical note — almost everything here is seasonal. Outside the summer window the Venice catamaran stops entirely, and island frequencies drop, so confirm live dates before planning a shoulder-season trip.
