Ferries from Portør brygge

Portør's link to Stabbestad is 2.8 nautical miles at 17 to 20 minutes, with ten sailings a week; Kragerø is 3.9 miles at 30, with five. Departures at 10:10, 10:30, 17:10 and 17:30, and the whole service ends on 16 August.

A season that finishes in the middle of August is shorter than almost anything else in this timetable — this is a summer route in the strictest sense, and the boats stop when the holiday traffic does.

Portør is an old pilot station and harbour of refuge at the outer edge of the Kragerø archipelago, on a headland where ships waited out the weather before rounding the coast. Kragerø itself was a timber port that shipped to the Netherlands and Britain, and the painter Edvard Munch spent several productive years there — the light on this stretch of the Skagerrak has been an argument for coming here for a long time.
