Twenty hours means a full night aboard in each direction and a vessel that is as much hotel as ferry. The 14:00 departure is fixed year-round: there is no seasonal variation on this route at all.
The terminal is at Hjortnes on the western side of the inner harbour, and the ship's first hour is spent sailing down the Oslofjord past the islands, the Drøbak narrows and the fort at Oscarsborg before reaching open water. Oslo's harbour has been the country's principal port since the medieval town of Christiania was laid out around it, and the Kiel route is the last of the long-haul passenger lines that once left from here for the continent.
