Ferries from Ocean Falls

Ocean Falls was a company town of several thousand people. The mill closed in 1980, the population fell to a few dozen, and what remains is a settlement reachable only by boat or floatplane — with 4 active sailings serving it.

Where the ships go

• Bella Coola — about 10 hours 10 minutes.
• Port Hardy (Bear Cove) — about 15 hours.

⚠ Summer only, and one sailing each

The Discovery Coast service that calls at Ocean Falls operates in summer. Outside that window the Inside Passage sailing runs Port Hardy to Prince Rupert without coming here at all.

With a single scheduled departure on each route and voyages of ten to fifteen hours, arriving without a confirmed way out is a serious mistake rather than an adventure.

What is there

A dam, a hydroelectric plant that still runs, the shell of a large hotel, and rows of empty buildings being reclaimed by rainforest. A small year-round population lives at Martin Valley nearby.

The rainfall here is extraordinary even by Central Coast standards — the town's swimmers once trained indoors year-round and produced several national champions, which is the sort of thing that happens when it rains this much.

Practicalities

There is no store to rely on, no fuel for visitors and very limited accommodation. Anyone coming here should arrive self-sufficient and with the return leg already booked.

Why it is on the schedule at all

Because the people who remain have no other scheduled connection. That is the whole logic of the Central Coast services — they exist for residents first, and visitors travel on a timetable built for someone else.
