Ferries from Newhaven

Everyone knows Dover is the fast way to France. Newhaven's argument is different and it is about geography, not speed: four hours at sea from Sussex puts you in Normandy, roughly two hours' driving further south than a Dover crossing does.

The crossing

Newhaven to Dieppe takes about 4 hours, with 3 sailings in our timetable. DFDS is the exclusive operator, working the route with two ships — the Côte d'Albâtre and the Seven Sisters. Some overnight sailings run closer to five hours.

⚠ Compare total journey time, not crossing time

A ninety-minute Dover crossing followed by three hours down the A16 and A28 is not faster than four hours at sea that lands you already in Normandy. It is also considerably less restful.

The calculation flips depending on where you start in England and where you are going in France. From Sussex to Normandy, Newhaven usually wins. From the Midlands to Calais, it never does.

Rail and sail

Newhaven Harbour station is at the terminal, on the line from Lewes and Brighton, with connections from London Victoria. Foot passengers can go from central London to central Dieppe by public transport without changing mode more than twice.

It is one of the few remaining British ferry ports where the train genuinely delivers you to the ship.

The overnight option

Sailing overnight turns the crossing from a journey into accommodation, arriving in France at the start of a day rather than the end of one. On a four-hour route that means a short night, so cabins matter more than they would on a longer crossing.

The town

Newhaven is a working port at the mouth of the Ouse, with Brighton fifteen minutes west and the South Downs immediately behind. It is not a place to arrive early and wait — Lewes or Brighton are the sensible places to spend the hours before a sailing.
