Ferries from Lyngør Holmbrygga

Holmbrygga is the arrival quay for Lyngør, the car-free island village off Tvedestrand on Norway's southern Sørlandet coast. Lyngør is not a single island but a cluster — Holmen, Odden, Lyngøya and Steinsøya — where whitewashed timber sea-captains' houses crowd along narrow sounds, with no roads and no cars anywhere. The village was named Europe's best-preserved in 1991, and that character is intact: around a hundred year-round residents, a great many summer guests, and boats doing the work cars do elsewhere. Holmbrygga puts you within a minute's walk of the heart of the village.

The service across is a small passenger ferry — the «Lyngør Kommunalen» boat — not a car ferry, so you travel on foot with your luggage. It shuttles between Lyngør and Gjeving brygge on the mainland, the crossing taking only about ten minutes across the sheltered sound. Gjeving is the road-accessible end, reached by car or bus from Tvedestrand and the E18, and it is where you leave the vehicle before stepping aboard. The route is run by Sørlandets Maritime on behalf of the regional transport authority AKT, alongside the water taxis and charter boats the same operator works in these waters.

On a normal weekday there are close to twenty departures, with a first boat in the early morning around 07:17 and the last leaving late in the evening, near 21:53 — enough that the island functions as a real community rather than a summer-only stop. Some late-evening and weekend sailings run on request rather than fixed times, so if you plan to arrive or leave outside core hours it is worth calling ahead to confirm the boat will run. Traffic swells sharply in July, when day-visitors, sailors and cabin owners all converge; outside high summer it is quiet and distinctly local. Always check the current timetable before travelling, particularly the last departure back to Gjeving, and remember there is nowhere to park on the island itself.
