About
About Kilboghamn ferjekai
The ferry from this quay crosses the Arctic Circle. Roughly halfway over, the boat passes the globe-shaped monument on the island of Vikingen — a navigation mark, lit at night, standing at 66°33′ north.
The crossings
- Jektvik — about 50 minutes, 11 sailings. This is the Arctic Circle leg.
- Sørfjorden — about 10 minutes, 12 sailings.
46 active sailings, on county road 17 in Nordland.
⚠ Stand outside for the middle of the crossing
The Vikingen globe is small, low and easy to miss from inside a warm saloon, and there is no announcement on a working county ferry. It appears to starboard heading north, roughly in the middle of the fifty minutes.
This is the only place in Norway where a scheduled car ferry crosses the line, so it is worth the cold.
What the Arctic Circle actually is
The latitude above which the sun does not set at midsummer and does not rise at midwinter. It is a line of astronomy, not of geography, and it drifts slowly — the monument marks where it was, not precisely where it is.
The other well-known Norwegian marker is the Polarsirkelen centre on the E6 at Saltfjellet, inland. This one is at sea and considerably less visited.
Kystriksveien
County road 17 uses six ferries between Steinkjer and Bodø, and this is the longest and most exposed of them. Driving the Coastal Route takes days rather than hours, and the ferries are the reason.
Practicalities
No booking, arrival order, AutoPASS billing by plate. Summer queues at this crossing genuinely exceed a sailing, and with only eleven departures a day-equivalent, missing one is a long wait at a quay with almost nothing on it.
