About
About Ketchikan
One sailing a day, and it cuts the day in half. The boat leaves Hollis at 08:00 and comes back out of Ketchikan at 15:30, three hours and 32.7 nautical miles each way, seven days a week with the Inter-Island Ferry Authority.
That single pair of times is what connects Prince of Wales Island to everywhere else. Prince of Wales is one of the largest islands in the United States and has road, logging and fishing communities across it, but no scheduled link of its own to the mainland network — the ferry to Ketchikan is the connection, and missing it costs a full day.
Ketchikan itself is on Revillagigedo Island, built along a steep waterfront on the Tongass Narrows with the airport on yet another island across the channel. It holds one of the largest collections of standing and restored totem poles anywhere, and takes more rain than almost any other town in the country — both of which follow from the same coastal rainforest.
