Ferries from Holwert

The channel to Ameland is silting up. Sedimentation near Holwerd runs at rates of up to six metres a year, and the fairway has become narrow and unstable enough that the operator introduced one-way traffic through it for safety. Delays here are not bad luck — they are the crossing's central problem.

The crossing

Holwerd to Ameland takes about 25 minutes, with 20 sailings in our timetable, operated by Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten. 40 active sailings across the port in both directions.

⚠ Build a delay into the plan

One-way working in the channel means a ferry sometimes waits for the opposing one to clear before it can move. Combined with the tide, that turns a published 25-minute crossing into something longer with no warning.

Never plan a tight onward connection from either end. If you are catching a train from Leeuwarden or a flight, leave a substantial margin.

What is being done

In February 2025 Wagenborg and Next Generation Shipyards signed a contract for a new Wadden ferry for the fast service — a multi-million-euro investment aimed squarely at keeping Ameland accessible. Dredging continues alongside.

Neither solves the underlying issue, which is that the Wadden Sea moves sand faster than anyone can remove it.

The terminal

Holwerd is a village on the Frisian mainland with a ferry pier at the end of a long causeway out into the mudflats. There is parking, a bus connection to Dokkum and Leeuwarden, and very little else.

It is a place you pass through. Arriving early means sitting in a car park looking at the Wadden Sea, which is more pleasant than it sounds and less so in November.

Tides

This is the Wadden Sea, and the water here is shallow enough that the tide dictates what is possible. That is the same constraint that has governed every crossing to these islands for centuries — the ferry is simply the current answer to it.
