About

About Gjendesheim brygge

Twenty-three sailings a week make this the busiest pier in Norway's mountain-lake network, and they all go to the same place. Memurubu is 5 nautical miles up Gjende, 20 to 25 minutes, with departures from 07:45 to 15:25 under two day patterns.

The reason is a single walk. Besseggen is a ridge between Gjende and Bessvatnet that thousands of people cross in a day: take the early boat to Memurubu, climb, and walk back along the ridge to this pier. The boat has to run often enough to put a whole day's walkers on the mountain before mid-morning.

Gjende itself is the pale green-blue that glacial silt from the Memuru river gives it, held between the walls of Jotunheimen. The season runs from late June to the middle of September, which is exactly as long as the ridge is safely walkable — the timetable and the snowline agree.
