The crossing

⚠ It lands at Nanaimo Harbour — not Departure Bay, not Duke Point

Nanaimo has three BC Ferries terminals and they serve completely different routes. Nanaimo Harbour is the downtown one and the only one Gabriola connects to.

Departure Bay goes to Horseshoe Bay; Duke Point goes to Tsawwassen. Arriving at either expecting a Gabriola boat is a common and expensive mistake — they are a twenty-minute drive apart.

Free at the terminal for 24 hours across 12 spaces, plus about 40 paid spaces nearby. Neither is a long-stay option, and the free dozen goes early on weekdays.

The island

Gabriola is close enough to Nanaimo to be a suburb and separate enough to feel like neither. It has a well-known arts community, the Malaspina Galleries sandstone formations on the shore, and a road network that reaches most of it.

The twenty-five-minute crossing lands you in downtown Nanaimo rather than at a highway terminal, which makes walking on genuinely practical.

Timing

Commuter-shaped: heaviest toward Nanaimo in the morning and back in the late afternoon. Weekends are quieter in both directions.
