About
About Fulford Harbour (Salt Spring)
Salt Spring Island has three ferry terminals and they point in three different directions. Fulford Harbour faces Vancouver Island's southern tip; Vesuvius Bay faces Crofton further up the same coast; Long Harbour faces the mainland. Which one you want depends entirely on where you are starting, and the island is big enough that guessing wrong costs a real drive.
The three, and what each is for
- Fulford Harbour, on the southeast side — sailings to Swartz Bay, about 35 minutes, with 28 sailings in and 17 out in our timetable. This is the Victoria connection.
- Vesuvius Bay, on the northwest side — sailings to Crofton on Vancouver Island, for the mid-island and Nanaimo.
- Long Harbour, on the east — the link to Tsawwassen and the mainland.
Only Fulford appears in our current timetable, so the route list on this page is one third of the island's actual connections.
⚠ Book accommodation and ferry in the same decision
Salt Spring is around thirty kilometres long with a single spine road and no shortcuts. Landing at Fulford when your cottage is near Vesuvius means driving most of the island's length on arrival, and again on the way out.
The Swartz Bay crossing is the most frequent of the three, which tempts people into using it by default. That is right if you are coming from Victoria and wrong if you are coming from Nanaimo or the mainland.
Arriving at Fulford
Fulford Harbour is a small village at the head of a long inlet — a general store, a couple of cafés and the ferry ramp. Ganges, the island's main settlement, is about fifteen minutes north.
The terminal is compact with limited holding lanes. On summer weekends the queue can extend up the road, and the sailing fills before the queue does.
Practicalities
The Gulf Islands routes run largely on arrival order rather than reservation, and the vessels are small. Arriving early is worth more here than any booking strategy.
Foot passengers and cyclists rarely have trouble; vehicles on a Sunday afternoon in August frequently do. See Swartz Bay for the other end and the wider Gulf Islands network.
