Ferries from Bodø hurtigbåtkai

Bodø hurtigbåtkai is the city's express passenger-boat quay, and it should not be confused with Bodø's car-ferry berth (the ferjekai, used by the Moskenes/Værøy/Røst car ferry) or the coastal-route quay nearby. From this hurtigbåtkai fast catamarans fan out to the scattered islands and small settlements of the Salten district — vessels built for speed and passengers, with no car deck, though bicycles are usually allowed aboard.

The destinations are almost all tiny island communities for which the boat is a genuine lifeline rather than a tourist cruise. Regular runs reach Helligvær, an island group about 25 km northwest of the city, along with Givær (a slow crossing of around an hour to the outermost island), Bliksvær (a quick hop of roughly 20 minutes), the tall island of Landegode, and the far-flung Fleinvær islands. Other sailings serve the Gildeskål-side communities such as Sørarnøy, Nordarnøy, Sandhornøy and Støtt, and mainland stops toward Kjerringøy, Steigen and Hamarøy.

Because the routes exist to keep small populations connected, timetables are shaped around islanders' needs — a handful of departures a day, sometimes on request or seasonal patterns — so casual visitors island-hopping from Bodø should plan carefully around the published schedule and be aware that weather on the exposed Vestfjord side can disrupt sailings.

For travellers, the reward is access to genuinely remote, sparsely populated islands with bird cliffs, old fishing hamlets and wide skies, only a short fast-boat ride from a regional city. It pays to double-check which quay your boat leaves from, since Bodø's waterfront has several adjacent berths for different services, and to buy tickets in advance where the app allows. Landegode and Helligvær in particular make rewarding half-day escapes, while the longer runs to Fleinvær or the Gildeskål islands suit travellers with more time and a firm grasp of the return timetable.
