Ferries from Bay Ridge

Bay Ridge's landing at the 69th Street Pier does something no other NYC Ferry stop does: it connects Brooklyn directly to Staten Island, 12 minutes across the Narrows, 39 times, under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The Brooklyn–Staten Island link

Without it, getting from Bay Ridge to St George means either driving the bridge or going into Manhattan and back out on the Staten Island Ferry. Twelve minutes of water replaces well over an hour.

It is the kind of connection that looks obvious on a map and did not exist for decades.

The 69th Street Pier was the Brooklyn terminal of a municipal ferry to Staten Island until the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964. The current landing sits on the same site — the second time boats have run from here.

Worth remembering when a fixed link is described as making a crossing obsolete. Sometimes the water wins the argument back.

Getting there

The R train at Bay Ridge–95th Street is a walk of roughly ten minutes downhill, and the Shore Road promenade runs past the pier. The view straight up at the bridge from the end of the pier is one of the better free things in Brooklyn.

Timing

Commuter-shaped with substantial weekend use in summer. Fares are separate from the subway with no transfer.
