Ferries from Andenes ferjekai

The road up Andøya ends here. Fv82 runs the length of the island and stops at Andenes, and beyond the quay there is nothing but the Norwegian Sea — which is precisely why this small place has a rocket range, a whale-watching industry and a ferry to another island entirely.

What the quay is for

One scheduled route: Andenes to Gryllefjord on Senja, about 100 minutes, with 3 sailings each way in our timetable, under the Svipper network for Troms.

It is a summer service and it cannot be booked. The season dates, the queue and how early to arrive are covered on the Vesterålen guide, because they shape the whole trip rather than just the crossing.

⚠ Without this ferry the road is a dead end

That is the thing to understand about Andenes. Arriving here without a booked onward crossing — and there is no such thing — means that if the boat is full or not running, the only way out is back down the length of Andøya the way you came.

Fv82 runs the length of the archipelago from Fiskebøl in Hadsel, through Sortland, to Andenes — roughly two hours of driving back to the mainland junction. Treat Andenes as a place you commit to rather than pass through.

Why anything is here at all

Andøya is 57 km long and covers 489 km², and it sits at the edge of the continental shelf — which puts deep water unusually close to shore. That geography built the fishing industry and, later, the whale-watching operations that run from this harbour through the summer.

It also explains Andøya Space, the rocket range south of the town. A launch site needs open sea downrange and a high latitude, and Andøya has both: the first Norwegian sounding rocket, Ferdinand 1, went up from here on 18 August 1962, and the facility was renamed from Andøya Rocket Range in 2014.

The 40-metre lighthouse, the airport and the museums are all within walking distance of the quay.

Practicalities

Payment on the Gryllefjord crossing is taken as you drive aboard rather than in advance. Foot passengers and cyclists are carried, and there is no reservation system of any kind.

Facilities in Andenes are those of a small town rather than a terminal — fuel, shops and food are in the town, a few minutes from the pier, and worth using before you sail.
