The Wheatland Ferry is a small cable ferry across the Willamette River in Oregon, United States, jointly run by Marion and Yamhill counties. One of the last ferries still operating on the Willamette, it has crossed here since the 1850s.
Across the Willamette
The ferry links Matheny Road on the Marion County side with Wheatland Road in Yamhill County, near Willamette Mission State Park between Salem and Newberg. The roughly 580-foot crossing carries cars and pedestrians as a rural shortcut where the nearest bridge is some 15 miles away — around 240,000 vehicles a year.
Vessel and fares
The current boat, the Daniel Matheny V (2002), is an electric cable ferry with a diesel generator and capacity for nine vehicles, guided across by steel cables. Each successive ferry has carried the name of pioneer Daniel Matheny, who founded the crossing. Vehicles pay a toll in US dollars; pedestrians cross free.
