Vineyard Fast Ferry runs one route and it is a deliberately unusual one: Quonset Point in Rhode Island to Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, 105 minutes, seven departures a day, every day.

It starts in the wrong state

Almost everyone reaches Martha’s Vineyard from Woods Hole on Cape Cod, a forty-five minute crossing. This service leaves from Rhode Island instead and takes more than twice as long at sea. The reason is on land: Quonset Point is reached without driving the length of Cape Cod, which in summer is where the real delay lives.

Trading sea time for road time

That is the whole proposition. An hour and three quarters on the water against a shorter crossing preceded by a Cape Cod traffic queue that can consume an afternoon. For anyone coming from New York, Connecticut or western Rhode Island, the longer boat is frequently the shorter journey — and it is entirely invisible if you compare crossings rather than doors.

Seven sailings from half past eight to half past five

Departures run 08:30 to 17:30, every day of the week, with no reduced weekend pattern in our data. Seven a day on a 105-minute crossing means the boats are working most of the daylight hours — a serious operation rather than a couple of seasonal excursions.

Oak Bluffs, not Vineyard Haven

The island end is Oak Bluffs, which matters if you have booked accommodation elsewhere on the Vineyard. It is a different town from Vineyard Haven, where the main car ferries land, and the bus connections from each are not the same. Check which harbour your onward plan assumes.

Passengers only

This is a fast passenger service, so vehicles stay on the mainland — which on Martha’s Vineyard in summer is arguably the better outcome anyway. If you need a car on the island you need the conventional ferries from Woods Hole instead, and this page is not the one you want.
