About

About Vestlandske

Vestlandske runs the ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt through the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. The crossing takes 1 hour 5 minutes and it is a working car ferry, not just a sightseeing boat — cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and bicycles all travel.

The ships, and why it matters which one you get

The route is worked by the Skånevik, built in 1967 and protected as a cultural heritage vessel, carrying about 20 cars — and by the larger Ullensvang. That protected status has a practical consequence: Skånevik has no lift, because the heritage designation prevents the alteration. Ullensvang has a full-size elevator and a stairlift. If step-free access matters to you, check which vessel is scheduled.

Electric, but not yet

New electric ferries are under construction for this route. Until they enter service the classic vessels continue — so the zero-emission fjord you may have read about is still ahead, not current.

Booking and boarding

Vehicle space must be booked in advance, and you should arrive 30 minutes before departure. The driver is included in the vehicle ticket, and one car package covers the vehicle, the driver and up to four passengers. Coaches need to contact the operator first. Dogs are welcome.

On board and along the way

The fjord passes the Seven Sisters and the Suitor waterfalls and the abandoned mountain farms clinging to the cliffs. Both ships have outdoor viewing areas and a café serving hot meals, snacks and drinks — note that food and drink not bought on board may not be consumed. Audio guiding runs through the RoadSpot app. Tickets are sold through Norway's Best.
