The Fjords Schedules 2026

On 1 January 2026 the rules changed on the water this operator works. Since that date, passenger ships under 10,000 gross tons may not emit carbon dioxide or methane while inside Norway’s World Heritage fjords. The Geirangerfjord is one of them, and the Hellesylt to Geiranger crossing runs straight through it.

A parliament set the deadline eight years in advance

The Norwegian parliament resolved in 2018 to make the fjords a zero-emission zone as soon as possible and by 2026 at the latest. The protected waters are the Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Sunnylvsfjord and Tafjord. Together they became among the first zero-emission zones at sea anywhere in the world — not a voluntary scheme, a legal requirement with a date on it.

The company built for it before it was law

The Fjords put Future of The Fjords into service as the first fully electric carbon-fibre vessel in the world, working the Flåm–Gudvangen run through the Nærøyfjord. Its sister ship Vision of The Fjords is a diesel-electric hybrid. Both are served by a floating charging platform, the PowerDock, which stores power slowly from a modest shore connection and delivers it fast to the vessel — the practical answer to charging a ship in a village with no grid capacity to spare.

The same crossing at four different lengths

Hellesylt to Geiranger is not one journey. Our data records the leg at 35, 45, 65 and 125 minutes depending on departure — the same two quays, the same fjord. The short runs are transport; the long ones slow down for the waterfalls and the abandoned farms on the cliff walls. Geiranger back to Hellesylt is uniformly 65 minutes. If you are connecting to a bus at the far end, the departure you pick matters more than on almost any route on this site.

Be careful with the timetable on this page. The departures we hold are dated 23 May to 30 October 2025 — that season has ended, and they are no longer a valid schedule. They are useful for understanding the shape of the service: ten departures each way, spread from 08:30 to 18:00, running every day of the week through the summer. For actual sailing times, go to the operator.

Why this route exists at all

Hellesylt and Geiranger are both at the end of long, steep valleys, and the road between them climbs over a mountain pass that closes in winter. The boat is the direct line. That is why a crossing best known to cruise passengers is also a real transport link, and why the emission rules landed on it rather than on a tourist excursion nobody depends on.
