About Raymond Island Ferry
The Raymond Island Ferry is a small council-run cable ferry in the Gippsland Lakes of Victoria, Australia. Operated by East Gippsland Shire Council, it is the only link between the mainland town of Paynesville and Raymond Island, which lies just a couple of hundred metres offshore.
Paynesville to Raymond Island
The chain ferry crosses McMillan Strait between Paynesville and Raymond Island in about four minutes, carrying cars, cyclists and pedestrians. A ferry has run here since 1889, and the current chain ferry dates from 1997; pedestrians, bicycles and mobility scooters travel free.
A koala island
Raymond Island is well known for its koala colony, established in 1953, making the short ferry ride a popular wildlife day-trip as well as an everyday lifeline for residents. Vehicle fares are in Australian dollars (around A$18 return for a car), collected on board.
