About

About NT

Nordjyllands Trafikselskab is the public transport authority for North Jutland — buses and trains, and one sea crossing. It does not own the ferry. The boats on the Frederikshavn to Læsø run belong to Læsø Kommune, the island’s own municipality.

Ninety minutes to an island that owns its own ferry

The crossing from Havnepladsen in Frederikshavn to Vesterø Havn is timetabled at 90 minutes in both directions. Two vessels work it, Ane and Margrete, running year round and carrying residents, visitors and freight. M/F Margrete Læsø takes roughly 75 cars and 500 passengers.

Nine different day patterns on one route

This is the most fragmented timetable of any route in our data. The 15 departures from Frederikshavn carry nine distinct day masks between them — some daily, some Monday to Friday, some weekend only, some on combinations that follow no obvious rule. The published pattern runs between four and eight departures a day depending on the date. There is effectively no such thing as a standard week here.

The day starts on the island

Note which end wakes first. Sailings from Vesterø on Læsø begin at 05:30; from Frederikshavn the first is 07:20. The last boat off the mainland is 22:00 and the last off the island 20:10. The ferry sleeps at Læsø, which is what you would expect from a service the island owns rather than one run for the mainland’s convenience.

It sits inside a bus and train network

Because the crossing is published by the regional transport authority, it is planned alongside the buses and trains of North Jutland rather than as a standalone shipping service, and journeys are looked up through the Danish national journey planner. Frederikshavn is a railway terminus, so the practical trip for a foot passenger is train to Frederikshavn and straight onto the boat.

Check before you travel, especially in August

The authority changes bus and train timetables periodically and publishes the switchover dates in advance — a change took effect on 9 August 2026. Ferry departures are not always adjusted on the same date as the buses, so a connection that worked last month is worth re-checking rather than assumed.
