About

About Marstrandsfärjan

The two-minute crossing between Koön and Marstrandsön is called the Marstrandsfärjan, and it is run by Kungälv municipality rather than a shipping company. It sails around the clock — departures are scheduled from just after midnight through to 23.46 — because Marstrandsön has no road link at all.

A car-free island

Marstrandsön is bilfri: private cars cannot be taken across. Only nyttotrafik — commercial and service vehicles — may be ferried over, and the municipality's regulations set out which categories qualify. Everyone else walks on. Fees for the Marstrand harbour area are reviewed annually.

Every ticket is a return

All tickets are sold tur och retur, valid out to Marstrandsön and back — there is no single-journey fare for the crossing itself. Tickets can be bought at marstrandsfarja.se, which works as an app and can be added to a phone's home screen, or in person at the customer-service kiosk by the Koön ferry berth, Lilla Varvsgatan 2 B.

Kiosk opening hours change with the season

High season, May to August: every day, 08.00–20.00. Low season, September to April: Monday to Friday 07.00–16.00, weekends 10.00–15.00, closed for lunch 12.00–13.00.

Which Västtrafik tickets work — and which do not

This is the detail that catches people out. Västtrafik period tickets (one month, three months or a year, zone B, AB or ABC), three-day tickets, 24-hour zone B tickets, senior tickets for zone B and school cards for zone B are all valid on the ferry. Single tickets bought from Västtrafik are not. The municipality states it plainly, in capitals, on its own booking site. Senior tickets can now be carried in the Västtrafik To Go app and scanned at the turnstile like any other digital ticket.

School travel needs its own card

Pupils travelling to school by ferry apply for a skolkort, valid for a calendar year — so a new application is due in December for the January term. Processing takes about three weeks and the card is posted to the registered address. On the school-transport form the reason to select is "annan särskild omständighet", noting in the free text that the application is for a Marstrandsfärjan card. Groups can order tickets in advance at the same price, using form 80-05.
