About

About HSL Ferries (Helsinki)

HSL Ferries is the sea leg of Helsinki's public transport in Finland. The year-round Suomenlinna ferry is part of the HSL (Helsinki Region Transport) network — one of the rare sea routes covered by an ordinary city transit ticket — and is operated by the city-owned company Suomenlinnan Liikenne, in service since the 1950s.

To the sea fortress

The main line runs from Market Square (Kauppatori) across to Suomenlinna, the 18th-century sea fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Helsinki's most-visited attraction. For Suomenlinna's roughly 800 residents the ferry is the lifeline to the mainland, running all year; a weekday service ferry also sails from Katajanokka.

Fares

There is no separate ferry fare — a standard HSL ticket, bought in the HSL app or on a travel card, covers the Suomenlinna crossing just like a tram or metro ride. The main vessel is M/S Suomenlinna II, in service since 2004. (Seasonal summer water-buses to other islands are run by private operators outside the HSL ticket.)
