Finferries (Suomen Lauttaliikenne) is Finland's state-owned road-ferry operator, running around fifty crossings that stitch the country's archipelago and lake communities together. Based in Turku, it became an independent state company in 2010, inheriting a ferry service with roots in the national road administration going back generations.
Road ferries and archipelago links
Most of its routes are short road and cable ferries in the south-western (Turku) archipelago and the lakes — legally part of the public road network, so they carry cars and passengers free of charge. Longer commuter connections reach the outer islands. Named crossings include the busy Parainen–Nauvo route and the 9.5 km Korpo–Houtskär link.
An electric pioneer
Finferries led Finland into electric ferries: MS Elektra (2017) was the country's first battery-hybrid ferry, followed by its sister MS Altera and a battery-hybrid cable ferry, sharply cutting emissions on the archipelago routes. The fleet numbers around sixty vessels.
