Eastern Ferry Company (東方小輪) runs one of Hong Kong's shortest and oldest ferry hops — the little sampan-style boats that shuttle across the narrow Aberdeen Channel between Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island and the island of Ap Lei Chau.
A crossing measured in minutes
The trip takes only about four minutes and costs a few Hong Kong dollars, running through the day between landing steps on the Aberdeen Promenade and the pontoon at Ap Lei Chau near Marina Habitat. For generations it was the quickest way between the two shores; even now that a road bridge and the MTR South Island Line connect Ap Lei Chau, the ferry survives as a characterful shortcut past Aberdeen's floating community and typhoon shelter.
