About Beffen
A/S Bergens Elektriske Færgeselskab — the Bergen Electric Ferry Company — was founded in 1894 by the engineer Jacob Turmpy to run a crossing of Vågen, the harbour inlet that splits central Bergen in two. The boat has been known as Beffen ever since.
The name is now historically inaccurate
The company's own centenary address puts it plainly: the ferry is no longer electric. It moved first to petrol and then to diesel as the decades passed, leaving a company name that describes a propulsion system abandoned generations ago. The chairman writing in 1994 hoped it might one day become true again.
