ÆrøXpressen runs the shortest crossing to Ærø: Rudkøbing on Langeland to Marstal, in 50 minutes, on a modern purpose-built ferry.

The crossing is the scenery

The route threads through the South Funen archipelago — Strynø on one side, uninhabited islets on the other, with Birkholm and Halmø on the horizon. It works as transport and reads as a short cruise.

Arriving at the maritime capital

The ferry berths in the middle of Marstal, Ærø's maritime town, a few minutes from the Marstal Maritime Museum. Ærø is a working year-round community rather than a summer-only island.

Coming without a car

This matters if you are travelling by public transport: Flixbus and Fynbus both serve the ferry harbour at Rudkøbing, and there are connections onward from Marstal to Svendborg, Nyborg and Copenhagen. Foot passengers do not need to organise their own transfer.

Owned by its users

The company publishes a section for shareholders alongside the timetable and fares — it is structured as a shareholder company rather than a municipal or state operation, which is a different model from most Danish island ferries.

Marstal to Rudkøbing and the return each carry seven departures at 50 minutes. Sailings from Marstal run 06:30 to 18:50 and from Rudkøbing 07:40 to 20:00 — the hour’s offset is the turnaround at each end.

Those fourteen departures carry four separate day masks between them, which on a route with seven sailings a day means a meaningful share of the timetable changes with the day of the week. On a crossing where the alternative is a long detour by road and bridge, checking the date rather than the hour is the practical habit.
